HOW TO BECOME AN MOT TESTER

You need a Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification and four years trade experience to become an MOT tester. Once you have this qualification, you then need to pass the Award in MOT Testing. Finally, you will need to pass a VT8 MOT test observed by DVSA to gain your MOT License. After you have qualified, you will need to complete annual training and pass an annual assessment every year to maintain your testing status.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO BECOME AN MOT TESTER?

To be eligible to become an MOT tester, you must:

  • Be a skilled mechanic that has at least four years full time employment, permitted by law, in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested.
  • Have a Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification 
  • Hold a current, full UK driving license for the vehicle classes you want to test
  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • Be ‘of good repute’
