HOW TO BECOME AN MOT TESTER

A Nominated Tester (NT) is someone who is qualified to carry out MOT Tests.

You need a Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification and four years trade experience to become an MOT tester. Once you have this qualification you then need to pass the Award in MOT Testing. Finally you will need to pass a VT8 MOT test observed by DVSA to gain your MOT License. After you have qualified you will need to complete annual training and pass an annual assessment every year to maintain your testing status.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO BECOME AN MOT TESTER?

To carry out MOT Tests you must be an approved nominated tester (NT). To be eligible to become a nominated tester you must:

  • Have a Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification 
  • Have at least 4 years’ experience in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested
  • Hold a current, full UK driving license for the vehicle classes you want to test
  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • Be ‘of good repute’
